OUR SUSTAINABILITY WORK & VISION

The well-being of our environment is important to us. Our sustainability work today focuses on the climate, and therefore, our climate work is a natural part of our operations. Our priorities align with Systembolaget’s long-term sustainability agenda, the UN’s sustainability goals, and the Swedish government’s aim to be climate neutral by 2045.

WE ARE A MEMBER OF THE BEVERAGE INDUSTRY'S CLIMATE INITIATIVE

Since 2018, we have been a member of the Swedish Beverage Industry’s Climate Initiative (DKI), covering 80% of the total volumes in Systembolaget’s fixed assortment. DKI is a collaborative project founded in 2017 by Systembolaget, the Swedish Spirits & Wine Suppliers Association, and the Swedish Brewers. In this effort, colleagues in the wine industry work both individually and collectively to reduce our own as well as the entire industry’s climate impact. Members report, measure, and follow up on their climate impact based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG).

WE COMPENSATE FOR OUR EMISSIONS

We compensate for our transportation based on our emissions in the DKI report through climate compensation. In addition to what has been calculated in DKI for Contemporary Wines, we added an extra 9%. We support the climate compensation project Bhilwara, which contributes to both fossil-free solar energy in the Indian power grid and provides socio-economic benefits to the region’s residents. India has favorable conditions for solar energy, with a majority of sunny days throughout the year. Despite this, most of the electricity produced in India today comes from coal power. Among the major energy sources, coal emits by far the most carbon dioxide and has significant negative effects on people and the environment at the local level. In the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, a solar energy project has been installed with the capacity to produce renewable electricity of up to 9,100 MWh annually. Thanks to fossil-free solar energy, the project prevents emissions of approximately 8,700 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Solar energy is one of the energy sources that is likely to play a major role in the transition to a green and renewable energy network in India.

TRANSPORTATION AND PACKAGING – OUR LARGEST SHARE OF EMISSIONS

We work with our own brands, allowing us to have close collaboration with our partners to influence and inspire each other in our climate efforts. With our logistics partner, we annually review improvements to our transportation to reduce our climate footprint by using more environmentally friendly fuels, switching to more environmentally friendly transportation methods, such as from trucks to trains where possible. We have ongoing dialogues with our producers on how we can use more climate-friendly packaging, covering everything from the quality and weight of the bottles to bag-in-boxes and labels in environmentally friendly paper, etc.

SUSTAINABILITY – A SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN

We use Worldfavor’s sustainability platform to collect, organize, and follow up on our producers’ sustainability efforts. We map out the supply chain for our products listed in the fixed assortment at Systembolaget, and our producers have signed Amfori BSCI’s Code of Conduct. (Business Social Compliance Initiative) The code is based on international conventions and agreements on human rights and working conditions and is a commitment to conducting business in an ethical and responsible manner. The code is written into Systembolaget’s purchasing agreements.

STEPS WE HAVE TAKEN SO FAR:

  • Joined the Beverage Industry’s Climate Initiative where we develop activities based on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Compensate for our emissions through climatecompensate.se.
  • Empowering certification program in our supply chain. All our products with fixed lists have signed Amfori BSCI’s Code of Conduct.
  • 70% of our still wines are sold in lightweight bottles.
  • We only use environmentally friendly courier transports from our office.

LONG-TERM GOALS:

  • The partnership with the Beverage Industry’s Climate Initiative will pave the way for a climate-neutral industry by 2045.
  • Continuously increase our share of climate-friendly packaging such as lightweight bottles, PET, bag-in-boxes, and use more renewable materials in all packaging of our total volume.
  • All our transports are fossil-free.
  • Use of origin-protected hydropower and increase the use of biofuels for electricity, heating, and cooling in rented facilities.
